CO2 Sequestration Certificates & Net Zero
CO2 sequestration certificates are issued for projects that capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2) from human activities before it is released into the atmosphere. These certificates serve as proof that a specific amount of CO2 has been permanently removed from the atmosphere through scientifically validated processes such as geological storage, biochar application, or soil carbon enhancement.
Sequestration certificates differ from traditional CO2 offset certificates, as they focus on long-term removal and storage rather than compensating for emissions through reduction projects. Companies and organizations can acquire these certificates to meet stringent climate targets and regulatory compliance under international agreements, such as the Paris Agreement and Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

CO2 Neutral vs. Net Zero
The carbon offset mechanism involves purchasing certificates for reducing CO2 emissions (from climate projects) and using them to offset your own emissions. By buying these certificates, you finance one or more environmental projects that reduce or avoid greenhouse gas emissions. This compensation allows you to claim a "CO2 Neutral" designation.
The Net Zero concept, however, goes beyond offsetting. It requires the sequestration of emissions, meaning that emissions are no longer merely compensated but are actively removed and stored over the long term. To align with the Net Zero concept, an organization or country must ensure that a volume of CO2 equivalent to what is emitted is sequestered.
The sequestration market can operate similarly to the offset market. Some sequestration certificates are beginning to emerge, but the costs remain high. A price reduction is expected in the coming years, though the availability of sequestration projects is still limited.
At Eco Alpina, our team is here to assist you in finding attractive projects and facilitating transactions for compensation or sequestration. It is crucial to use the correct terminology and communication strategy to avoid confusion with your stakeholders. Feel free to reach out to us for guidance.
